Celtic Symbol Meaning The Thistle is the national emblem of Scotland, called the Guardian Thistle. The thistle, it is said, saved an entire Scottish army. A thousand years ago, during an invasion of Scotland, an advancing enemy warrior stepped on a thistle and cried out in pain thereby waking the sleeping Scotsmen, who were able to defeat the intruders. It's meaning is, "No one provokes me with impunity".
